Paying for Two Sides of a War

I was listening to RTE news (Public News from the Republic of Ireland). RTE had on Michael Scheuer who was head of the CIA unit that hunted Osama bin Laden (Anniversary of Iraq War). One of his comments that mirrored my own thoughts is how the US is paying for both sides in the "War on Terror". The US is obviously paying for its own military. And it is also paying for its enemies through its huge oil imports.

The enemies of the US - Iran, Venezuela and the Insurgent supporters in Saudi Arabia, are able to cause trouble because we send them 100s of billiions for their oil every year. If the US cut its consumption, we would deal with our problems without sending our military to sacrifice and die in Afganistan, Iraq and maybe in the future Iran. Chavez would not be in Argentina mocking President Bush. He would be in Caracas hiding in the La Casa Blanca. But would our politicians be brave enough to face the oil companies, ADM (yes, they love ethanol!), and the anger of motorist by raising gas taxes several $s per US gallon? No, not yet. What disaster will it take before this country gets serious?

I received monthly updates from some of my friends who are in Iraq. They are brave, dedicated and sacrificing to serving our country. But is the US populace willing to sacrifice some of their comforts and money for their own long-term interest and for our military?
